Generally, the Ayutthaya Historical Site, the ancient palace, and the royal temple, both inside and outside of the island of Ayutthaya, were left untouched after the kingdom was destroyed in 1767 AD. In about the middle of the 19th century, the Find Art department began the restoration work of the area, and later it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

So, from Bangkok, it takes about an hour and twenty minutes to arrive at our first historical temple, Wat Yai Chai Mong-kol (Chai Mong-kol means auspicious, Wat means temple, and Yai means big and is the name of the temple in Thai).

The history says that it was built in the 15th century. Later, King Naresuan the Great, who won over and declared Ayutthaya independent from Burma in 1568 as he was still the Prince of Ayutthaya and who later ruled Ayutthaya from 1590 to 1605 AD, added a large chedi to the temple ground to commemorate his victory over the Burmese prince.

The giant main Chedi is 62.10 meters in height, and the center part of the Chedi contains a dome-shaped room.

Next, visit Wat Mahathat.
